We are committed to bringing a great theatre experience to all of our patrons. We have a nationally recognized accessibility program and continually strive to provide accommodations and services to make our musical theatre productions accessible to everyone. Audio study guides for Guys and Dolls, Jesus Christ Superstar, Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret, MAMMA MIA!, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast are available before each show in CD-ROM format. If you would to request an audio study guide, please contact D.J. Zwicker-Sobrepeña, the Director of Education & Outreach, at 408.453.1533 or AMTSJ-Access@amtsj.org.

In addition to our many services, we provide guided “Backstage Access Tours” for our patrons. For the upcoming 2007/2008 season, please join us for interpreted tours on the following dates:

Free Infrared Listening System logo Assistive Listening Devices
Complimentary, infrared, assistive listening devices are available at all of our performances for greater ease of hearing. The devices amplify sound through a receiver during the live performance and allow you to control the volume for your comfort level. They may be used with or without a hearing aid from any seat in the theatre.  Ask for an induction neck loop if you use a hearing aid with a “T” switch.  Headsets are distributed from a kiosk in the hallway after you pass the ticket ushers.  You will be asked to leave either a driver’s license or some other form of identification when you check out a device.

Audio Described Perfomances logo Audio Described Performances
We offer complimentary audio description for six performances of our produced shows and two performances for most touring productions. Audio description provides professional narration of actions and visual elements on stage that are broadcast live through a receiver. The device may be used from any seat in the theatre.  We also provide audio description services for “Backstage Access Tours.” For the upcoming 2007/2008 season, please join us for tours on the following dates:

Braille Programs logo Braille Programs
Complimentary Braille programs are available from the Education & Outreach Department kiosk near the Box Office for all produced shows and some touring productions.

Large Print logo Large Print Programs
Large print programs are available from the from the ushers and the Education & Outreach Department kiosk near the Box Office for all produced shows, and most touring productions. They are a scaled-down version of the small-print program, and are available for all patrons at no extra charge.

Wheelchair Accessible logo Mobility Accommodations
There is wheelchair seating for 14 patrons per performance. The main entrances of The San Jose Center for Performing Arts are equipped with power doors and the house management staff will happily assist in directing you to the accessible entrance closest to your seats. There is an elevator to access the balcony level located near the Box Office. All restrooms on the main floor of the San Jose Center for Performing Arts are accessible; with one companion restroom located in the Main Lobby between the Box Office and the elevator. The facility has two main accessibility ramps; one off Almaden Boulevard and one off Park Avenue. Designated parking spaces for vehicles with valid DMV disability parking permits are available along Park Avenue adjacent to the San Jose Center for Performing Arts. These are metered spaces available on a first come first served basis.

Open Captioned Perfomances logo Open Captioned Performances
Open captioning visually displays the play’s dialogue and lyrics as they are spoken on stage throughout the entire performance. Captioning units may be used from any seat in the theatre, during our prescheduled access performances, at no additional charge. Simply reserve a captioning unit by calling the Box Office at 408.453.1550. Patrons who wish to share units need to be seated together. There are ten (10) captioning units available for anyone who wishes to enhance the theatre experience by not missing a word!

Sign Language Interpretation
Sign language interpretation is available for two performances for all our produced shows and most touring shows. We have a designated ASL section for prime viewing of the interpreters and the stage. We also provide “Backstage Access Tours.” For the upcoming 2007/2008 season, please join us for a tour with an interpreter on the following dates:

American Musical Theatre of San Jose will be spoke at the City of San Jose’s Disability Advisory Commission meeting on Monday, November 19, 2007 to promote our accessibility services and better serve our community.

Time: 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 pm

AMTSJ attended the County of Santa Clara Advisory Commission for Persons with Disabilities to promote our accessibility services and better serve our community.
