Volunteers and Internships

American Musical Theatre of San Jose needs energetic volunteers and interns for special events and operational support. AMTSJ, one of the largest, not-for-profit, professional musical theatre companies in the country, invites you to get “behind the scenes” with us. Volunteers and interns are eligible to earn service-learning credit for school and acknowledgment in a playbill. Each volunteer who completes 24 hours will receive a pair of complimentary tickets to an AMTSJ-produced show along with a backstage tour opportunity. We require volunteers and interns to be at least 16 years old, provide their own transportation, and sign release forms.

Volunteers

Volunteers are eligible to earn service-learning credit for school and community outreach. Each volunteer will receive acknowledgment in an AMTSJ playbill, along with a pair of complimentary tickets to an AMTSJ-produced show. American Musical Theatre of San Jose asks each volunteer to complete at least 24 hours.

Interns

For students looking to make a career in musical theatre, AMTSJ offers an exciting array of internships designed to help further that career. Exceptional positions are available in many departments on a need-be basis. The professional work experience can help interns fulfill educational requirements, as well as learn in a nurturing, hands-on environment. These are unpaid internships. Interns are eligible to earn service-learning credit for school, internship hours, and community outreach.  Each volunteer will receive acknowledgment in an AMTSJ playbill, along with a pair of complimentary tickets to an AMTSJ-produced show. American Musical Theatre of San Jose asks each intern to complete at least 24 hours.

The Costume Shop

The Costume Shop can accommodate up to four volunteers/interns at a time, and activities may include alterations, hand sewing, fabric preparation, organizing/sorting/filing of costume materials and accessories, as well as other small projects. Actual work assigned will depend on the interest and individual skills of the volunteer/intern. All volunteers/interns will be asked to wear work clothes, closed-toed shoes, and no loose hair or jewelry. Volunteers/interns must be able to walk up and down stairs and read and speak English. Full details will be given at the safety orientation. 

The Scene Shop

The Scene Shop can accommodate up to six volunteers/interns at a time, and activities may include light carpentry and painting, set dressing, and cataloging our vast inventory of scenic backgrounds and props. Actual work assigned will depend on the interest and individual skills of the volunteer/intern. All volunteers/interns will be asked to wear work clothes, closed-toed shoes, and no loose hair or jewelry. The shop is open from 8:00 am till 7:00 pm, Monday to Thursday. The shop is closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Full details will be given at the safety orientation. 

The Development Department

Volunteers/interns in Development must have a creative eye, excellent communication skills, are detail-oriented, work effectively with other volunteers, are computer savvy in Microsoft Office 2000, and have a passion for theatre.  Duties include:

  • Donor Stewardship: Thanking new and current donors via phone, adding handwritten notes to donor correspondence and sending wrap reports to show sponsors
  • Mailings:  Putting together event invites and acknowledgment letter mailings
  • Major donor communication: Hand addressing major donor correspondence
  • Events: Tracking RSVPs (encouraging attendance), event preparation, check in/greeter role
  • Research: Researching prospective individual donors, corporations, foundations online, creating a summary of giving for each prospect
  • Data Management: Computer-based data management projects in donor database
  • Copying/Filing: Individual and institutional giving communications

Hours:  4-16 hours per week.  Schedule can be flexible, but must be reliable.

The Marketing Department

Volunteers/interns would report directly to Nancy Marino, Director of Marketing.  Volunteers/interns should have the following skills: a keen creative eye, excellent communication skills, detail-oriented, ability to work effectively with others, computer savvy in Microsoft Office 2000, passion for theatre. Duties would include:

  • Assists in the production of routine promotional printed materials.
  • Provides administrative support to the marketing department as necessary.
  • Attends bi-monthly communications meetings.
  • Creates and maintains marketing files, records, calendars, logs and other documents.
  • Performs a range of staff and/or operational support activities.
  • Enters data and prints letters, tables, reports, and other materials.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Assist the Group Sales Department on various client fulfillment projects.
  • Research shows via the internet and communicate with other regional theatres.
  • Computer-based data input projects.
  • Prep materials for next season, copying and filing, create files and marquee slides, archiving, and prepare tour binders. 
Hours:  8-20 hours per week.  Schedule can be flexible, but must be reliable.

The Education & Outreach Department

Volunteers and interns in Education & Outreach should have a strong desire to serve students, educators, and the community. Actual work assigned will depend on individual skills and current projects. Must have excellent communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, (and FileMaker Pro possibly). Duties would include:

  • Assist in the production of routine promotional printed materials.
  • Provide administrative support to the Education & Outreach Department as necessary.
  • Create and maintains files, records, calendars, logs and other documents.
  • Perform a range of staff and/or operational support activities.
  • Enter data and prints letters, tables, reports, and other materials.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Assist the Group Sales Department on various client fulfillment projects.
  • Research via the internet and for study guides and outreach opportunities.
  • Data entry.
  • Prep materials for programs, copying and filing, create files, archiving, and prepare program binders.

Hours: 6-20 hours per week. Schedule can be flexible, but must be reliable.
